I know that there are a ton of incredible destinations out there for couples to choose for their elopement, and it can be hard to narrow down the right location for you. That’s why I’m here to share these Top Reasons to Elope in Italy!
Making the choice to elope isn’t always easy. It’s not generally what’s expected, and it can be hard to go against tradition and stand up for what feels authentic to you as a couple.
However, only you know what feels right, and you deserve to spend one of the most special experiences of your life exactly how you want. And if your heart desires an epic destination elopement in Italy, that’s exactly what you should do! This is not a time to play small. When you look back years from now at your elopement photos, you want to be high fiving each other and still marveling at the badass way you started your lives together.
Every couple has their own special reasons for eloping, and a unique vision of their perfect elopement experience. And with its rich history and varied landscape, Italy truly has something for every type of couple out there. For adventurous couples, there are the stunning peaks of the Dolomites to explore. If culture and history are more your thing, cities like Rome and Florence are home to some of the most iconic ancient treasures in the world. And beach lovers have multiple areas to explore, from the Amalfi Coast to the islands of Sicily and Sardinia.
For couples seeking a more relaxed vibe, there are the small towns and gorgeous countryside of Tuscany and the beautiful shore and villas of Lake Como. No matter what you are envisioning for your elopement, you’re bound to find it here! Check out this guide to the best places to elope in Italy for more of my favorite elopement spots!
Because there are so many different geographic locations to choose from, there are also a variety of activities that you can do for your elopement. From multi-day hiking adventures to sunset beach ceremonies and everything in between, whatever you’re into you’ll likely find it here! Here are just a few of the activities you can do during your Italy elopement:
Let’s be real – big traditional weddings are expensive. And honeymoons are also expensive. When you combine the two, you’re looking at a mind-boggling bottom line that can leave many couples with sticker shock.
According to the latest survey from theknot.com the average wedding in the US in 2021 cost $28,000. ($34,000 if you include the engagement ring!). And in case you’re wondering, that does not include the honeymoon.
If budget is a concern, think about which you would rather have: a party for hundreds of your not-so-closest family and friends, or an adventurous trip focused solely on your love, with every moment spent exactly the way you want? (Not going to lie, I know which one I would choose!)
Unlike some other European countries, there are no residency requirements for couples getting married in Italy. That means that couples from the US and other countries can apply for an Italian marriage license and have their official wedding ceremony in Italy. And in the US and most other countries, their marriage will be recognized at home.
That being said, there are quite a few steps involved in the process, along with waiting periods which can vary depending on the town where you plan to be married. Weddings and elopements also must take place only in designated areas with approved officiants, even for civil ceremonies.
That’s why many couples opt to have a symbolic ceremony in Italy. This simply means that a couple has their ceremony in Italy, but isn’t officially married until they obtain a marriage license in their home country. In most states in the US, this is a fairly simple process that just involves a trip to the county clerk’s office and possibly a few witnesses. In some states like Colorado, all you need to do is sign the license yourselves. A symbolic ceremony is the top choice for adventurous couples since it allows you the most flexibility in terms of where, how, and when you can have your elopement experience.

While elopements are generally much less stressful to plan that large traditional weddings, there are still details and logistics to plan to ensure you have the perfect day. And that certainly is the case for destination elopements. But don’t let that discourage you! It’s definitely possible to have a super fun and stress-free experience no matter where your elopement takes place.
The key is to work with a photographer who has experience with elopements, and specifically the type of elopement you want. Checking out a photographer’s website and social media is a great place to start, and then the next step is to schedule a free consultation call.
