There are some moments in life that are just absolutely wild. Then there are absolutely wild times that become truly unforgettable due to a combination of wondrous things. For Claire, Seth, and myself, their engagement shoot was exactly that – an unforgettable and absolutely wild experience.
From the start, their love filled the air. what we didn’t expect to also fill the air, was quintessential Colorado weather that made already epic views truly unbelievable.
Seth and Claire had decided to take their engagement photos at Lost Gulch, which is a favorite location of mine, as well as pretty much anyone who wants a fantastic view. Lost Gulch is located just outside Boulder, up a winding steep road that leads to the top of a massive hill. When you get to the parking lot, you only have to walk a couple minutes to the lookout area, filled with boulders and rock formations, overlooking Colorado mountains out West. College kids, locals, visitors, lovers and more can always be found nestled up on these rocks watching the sunset together. I love shooting here, and was excited to meet Claire and Seth for what I hoped would be a wonderful shoot.
As I got closer to Boulder, and Lost Gulch’s hill grew bigger before me, I began to worry. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m a fan of Kurosawa, a legendary Japanese film director. He’s known for infusing all his movies with intense weather – gail force winds, thrashing rain, thick snow. He did this because it added intense emotions to the scene. When you see rain beating down on your hero, you know it’s going. To. Be. A. Day.
However, being covered in dense fog limits epic views, which is what lost gulch is all about. As I drove closer to our destination, I could see that Lost Gulch was completely covered by this frustrating dense fog, which may or may not have included rain. We’d make the shoot work no matter what, but the hope is always that the fog lifts.
After driving up the winding escalating road I met Seth and Claire in the lost gulch parking lot, still shrouded by clouds. luckily, the rain had stopped. That was a pretty good omen. As we said hello and I gathered my gear, we joked about the weather. My job is to always make my couples comfortable, so I reassured them that no matter what, this would be a heckuva a lot of fun, and we’d end up with fantastic photos celebrating their engagement.
We began to walk to the edge of the cliffs, and it was obvious from watching Seth help Claire over the rocky outcrops that they were filled with wonderful bubbly love. as we spent more time together, and their shyness left them, it only grew even stronger. Seth just couldn’t stop smiling the entire shoot, Claire couldn’t stop giggling, and it really made my heart melt.
Once we got to our first spot, with fog still surrounding us, we began to shoot. Seth and Claire wrapped themselves in each other’s arms, and began smooching away. And as they smooched, something crazy happened.
The fog began to lift, and the clouds began to part. it was still hazy but we weren’t in the rain, and we began to get our hopes up.
Then it happened. it really really happened. without knowing what was coming next, Seth led Claire to the ledge of the mountain top. As he did, holding her hand, the clouds literally began to part and beautiful yellow sun burst through, showering them with golden light. I mean, just take a look at the photos to see for yourself! I ain’t kidding!
We basked in that warm sun and oh boy, I really mean it when I say they were glowing. And then just as quick, within moments, it was gone. The deepest densest fog of the day rolled right in, covering everything. We couldn’t see more than 20 feet beyond us. But we rolled with it, and kept shooting. Kept laughing. Kept having fun. because that’s what it’s all about. That’s what life is all about. Love and laughter.
After some dense fog make out sessions, we decided it was time for a wardrobe change. So off we went back to the car, got changed, and began our way back to the viewing point. along the way we stopped amidst the trees for a different type of backdrop. they twirled and giggled and it was just adorable. we began our way back to the ledge overlooking what should be mountainous ranges…
And wadddyaknow.
As we approached our favorite spots, the clouds lifted once again and we were blessed with incredible views of the mountains just as the sun was setting. It truly was as if the clouds were parting just for Seth and Claire. Majestic mountains galore. And to top it all off, the views were still bracketed by clouds that seemed to roll in place, creating a surreal epic view.
Seth and Claire were a sight to behold. They were charming, and fun, and down to have a good time.
Their love was wonderful and they reinforced for me why I do what I do. I just love connecting with beautiful souls such as them, and providing them with ever-lasting memories of their inspiring love.
Wedding photography is a gift that allows me to have heightened connections with people, and share in their love for each other. It’s a fantastic experience and I’m so grateful to be a part of it. Moments like this is what I live for.
