Italian Elopement FAQ

It would be weird if you didn’t have questions about getting married in another country. I have answers!

I do, and it’s really that easy! Maybe you have a general idea in mind of what you want. Cool — I’ll help you see it through! Maybe you have absolutely no idea what you want, and you’re not even sure where to start. That’s perfectly fine, too!

Whether you have 100 ideas in mind or just 1 (that you want to elope in Italy), I promise you that we’ll plan an elopement that feels magical without the stress.

Nope! I don’t charge any travel fees to get to and around Italy when you hire me. That means my hotels, cars, flights, buses, trains, lodging, etc., are all covered in my packages when you elope in Italy.

There are also no extra fees for your photos. What you pay for is what you get (as in, you get stunning photos that you have to send to all your family and friends immediately).

You will be responsible for obtaining any permits and paying for any extra day of activities. However, I am here to help direct you in all the right directions regarding who you need to apply with and talk to.

For instance, you’ll be responsible for booking and payment if you want to reserve a specific location or take a Jeep ride somewhere. I’ll help research and gather all the necessary information to help you book, but you’ll be responsible for the rest.

Getting legally married in Italy takes a lot of coordination. Because of this, I typically recommend having a commitment ceremony. It’s a real wedding where you’re still reading vows and exchanging rings; it’s just not legally recognized. All you have to do is handle the paperwork when you get home.

If that’s not really your vibe, and you want to legally get married in Italy, I’m so down! Here’s how…

First of all, you’ll need to provide the following documentation:

  • Valid U.S. passport (or military ID if on active duty in U.S. Armed Forces)
  • Original or certified copy of your birth certificate
  • If applicable, evidence of the termination of any previous marriage/s (final divorce decree, annulment decree, death certificate, etc.)

Civil or religious ceremonies require multiple steps in order to be legally recognized. I recommend contacting an Italian consulate office well before your trip to understand the requirements and timelines fully. You’ll also need to do the following:

  • Get an affidavit, Nulla Osta or Dichiarazione Giurata, sworn before a consular office of your home country, stating that there’s no legal impediment to your marriage in your home country,
  • Have an Atto Notorio signed by two witnesses, attesting that there is no legal impediment to your marriage,
  • Show a declaration of intent to marry that will go to the civil registrar.

There is also a waiting period of up to 2 weeks from when you sign the affidavits to your wedding day. Be sure to check with the consulate and local officials as soon as possible to ensure you’re prepared.

Civil ceremonies need to have an approved officiant when you elope in Italy. It is usually the mayor or other designated official from the area where your ceremony will take place. If you want a religious ceremony, a Roman Catholic priest must officiate.

You will need 2 witnesses present when you apply for your Atto Notorio before your civil or religious wedding. Two witnesses must also be present at a civil ceremony.

Symbolic ceremonies, such as commitment ceremonies, do not require an officiant or witnesses. Commitment ceremonies are the easiest way to elope in Italy. You can then get official paperwork done back at home after you elope in Italy.

A commitment ceremony is a legitimate wedding ceremony that isn’t legally recognized. You can still do everything in a regular ceremony — exchange vows, rings, intentions — you just won’t sign legal paperwork at that moment.

Have the best time of your life in Italy, and just handle the paperwork at home.

Same-sex civil unions became legal in Italy in 2016. This affords same-sex and gender-neutral couples the same legal protections as other married couples. However, in some localities, the process and/or waiting period may differ from religious or civil ceremonies.

You’ll want to contact your country’s embassy and the locality where you plan to have your ceremony well before your trip to confirm the timeline and details.

At Adventure Amore, I firmly believe love is love, and ALL couples deserve the right to express that love however they choose.

While it is a step forward that Italy recognizes same-sex unions, it’s disappointing that they stop short of fully recognizing those unions as marriages. As I’ve said above, unless it’s super important to you to have your “official” ceremony in Italy, I recommend symbolic ceremonies for all destination elopements. That way, you don’t have to worry about the timeline and can focus on spending your day exactly how you want it. You will have a more relaxed experience, making it official at home before or after your trip.

Yes — the U.S. recognizes religious and civil marriages and same-sex civil unions in all states when you legally elope in Italy. However, commitment ceremonies are not legally recognized, and you’ll still need to file the usual marriage paperwork after your trip.
